If gum disease is something you're worried about, then take steps to keep your mouth clean, healthy, and happy. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects many adults living in the United States. Most of these adults are over the age of 30. Without the right dental care and tips, you may also be at risk for the disease.
Gum disease develops when plaque infects your gums. The disease also occurs in stages, which includes gingivitis. Untreated gingivitis can gradually change into periodontitis or advanced gum disease. Advanced gum disease can lead to tooth loss and other health problems.
If you're ready to protect your gums from periodontal disease, then follow the simple and healthy tips below.
You probably already know that brushing your teeth two times a day for at least 2 minutes each session can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. However, if you're not flossing your teeth as well, then you may still be at risk for gum disease. When done properly, flossing removes plaque from the places in your mouth that a toothbrush can't access.
Plaque can build up anywhere in your mouth, including around the necks of your teeth crowns. The sticky substance can also form on the backs of your teeth. If plaque hardens in these areas of your mouth, then it can be very difficult to remove with a toothbrush alone. Decay and infection can eventually develop in your teeth and gums.
It's a good idea that you floss once during the day or right before bedtime. If you can't remember to floss at any time of the day, then place sticky notes on your refrigerator, bathroom mirror, or another busy area of your home. You can also schedule a "reminder" text or wakeup call on your smartphone.
You also want to choose a flossing material that feels comfortable to you. Some adults use nylon and thread floss to clean their teeth. Other adults use a special type of floss called dental tape to remove plaque. If you have any concerns about what type of floss works best for you, then consult directly with a dentist in your area.
Once you establish a good flossing routine, keep your gums healthy by seeing a dentist for regular cleanings.
A family dentist can keep your gums healthy by cleaning your teeth. The cleanings usually occur twice a year, depending on your overall oral health. For instance, if you have a family history of gum disease or have a health condition that affects your gums, you may need to clean your teeth more often.
In addition, a dentist can examine the tissues below your gums for inflammation. Gingivitis only affects your gums, but if the condition goes untreated for a long time, it can eventually spread to your teeth ligaments. The infection can loosen up your ligaments and cause your teeth to move around in their sockets.
After your cleaning, a dentist will generally schedule a short follow-up appointment in the future. The appointment allows a provider to monitor your condition to see if you need additional periodontal care, such as root scaling and gum recession treatment. If you don't need additional treatment, then you may only need to return for your next checkup.
Once you return home, maintain good oral hygiene as much as possible. If your current methods or equipment don't clean your teeth and gums thoroughly, then contact a dentist for help. Many dentists recommended certain products for patients to use when they have problems with their gums.
